Extra Credit : Automating Inequality

Jason's story is an example of how these government policies control everything and how they are not always in our favor. When Jason was in trouble the hospital fixed him up, but what wasn't taken care of was the money. At the time his significant other was worried about him, not the insurance policy. Later, she had trouble with the insurance company and that is a worldwide phenomenon. Almost everyone at one point in their life has an issue with the insurance company and that is a perfect example of how these companies are causing issues. Now, of course insurance is helpful and reliable, but at times it can get frustrating. A lot of Jason's story and how his significant other had to deal with the fallout is representative of how society works. Things happen that we don't see coming and no matter how prepared we are, when it actually happens something always goes wrong.

Eubanks then takes this into who or what exactly is controlling these outcomes. She later goes on to believe the algorithms and system enforcing these impacts on their insurance is either controlled by humans or machines. She brings into light the "growth of automated decision-making". With this new rise of the machine and computing people are often afraid of what is capable and how this is going to affect America's working class. If a computer can do our job, doesn't that say more about us than about the computer? But shouldn't we strive to be better? Shouldn't this motivate us to let the computers take our job and for us to accomplish more than what a computer can?
