Being a First Generation Immigrant x Headphones :
My partner's salient identity was being a first generation immigrant. She believed that this defined who she is. Her identity helps her sympathize with others and understand things from a different perspective. It allows her to see and hear things that others do not. Because of her background she has the ability to see and hear things that others do not. People have selective hearing and hear only what they want to hear. For this, serious situations and problems are ignored. Metaphorically, this can be compared to wearing headphones. When one wears headphones they can easily ignore their surroundings and be ignorant of what is going on right next to them.
It is important to note the identity and its relevance to society. Immigrants are a large part of today's politics. Many people ignore the facts of how our society is ran and for that we do not have the support needed. We need to take our headphones off and not only see the world around us, but also HEAR it. A part of listening is being an active listener, meaning we need to take action. For people like my partner and her family, identity is everything. Being a first generation immigrant allows for a perspective without headphones because it forces them to listen because it concerns them. But that should not be the case. Everyone needs to listen.
