Phase 1, Post 6: Desktop Manufacturing

In the documentary "Print the Legend" shows a timeline of how the 3D printing industry came about. The progress of different companies are shown. The start of each company grew from 5 people to hundreds. In the documentary the first company, Makerbot, started in a small warehouse and made its way up to Brooklyn (right across from us in 1 metrotech!). Aside from that fun fact that one of the headquarters is right next to our school, the documentary views the ups and downs of 3D printing. Likewise, the article "Questioning the 3D Printing Revolution" also compares the advantages and disadvantages of the printing process. However, overall, it seems as though the article leans more towards the negative effects of printing, while the documentary is pro.

In the documentary the main remark regarding the 3D printers in a negative aspect is that media only focuses on when something "bad" happens. For example, the 3D printing of guns is shown more throughout media rather than the 3D printing of prosthetic limbs. Once something negative is brought into light the good is always in its shadow. The article emphasizes this point made in the documentary by questioning the revolution and saying that "believing that technology is the solution to deeply-rooted socio-economic issues is problematic on numerous levels"(Patel). We tend to be reliant on this change of technology which is making us lazy and that is the reason 3D printers and artificial intelligence is going to take over our jobs according to Patel. Personally, I agree more with the values of the documentary and looking at the things we are provided with as helpers. Technology is here for use and to make the future better, not to "take over". I think part of why many companies made their printer's open-source is just for that reason. They made their designs available to the public so that human minds can come together to improve on what is being made and to innovate. I think nothing is more creative and changing than the human mind because it is limitless and because of that, nothing is going to "take over".
